The Caribbean Moon - Larimar

Larimar looks like the Caribbean distilled into stone and in a sense, it is. Its colors move through every register of tropical water: pale sky blue, deep cerulean, soft seafoam, cloud white, and occasionally a turquoise so clean it reads almost as light rather than color. The patterns within the stone radiating, feathery, sometimes volcanic in their swirl suggest waves caught mid-motion, or the view straight down through clear water to a white sand bottom. There is no other stone that carries this particular quality of coolness and depth at once.

Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite, a sodium calcium silicate mineral. What makes it blue and what makes it found in only one place on earth is a partial substitution of copper for calcium within the mineral’s crystal structure. That copper, combined with the specific volcanic and hydrothermal conditions of its formation, produces the color range that has made larimar one of the most coveted stones in the world of artisan jewelry. It forms in volcanic cavities within a single mountainside in the Barahona Province of the Dominican Republic, in a deposit so localized that the entire global supply comes from one small mine on one Caribbean island.

The stone was known to the indigenous Taíno people long before colonial arrival, but was largely forgotten until 1974, when a Dominican craftsman named Miguel Méndez rediscovered it along the coastal cliffs and named it by combining his daughter’s name Larissa with the Spanish word for sea. The name fit perfectly.

Larimar measures 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale softer than many jewelry stones, which means it is best suited for pendants, earrings, and pieces handled with care rather than daily hard wear. DAILY WEAR

Put jewelry on last - after lotion and perfume. Remove before swimming, cleaning , or working with your hands.

CLEANING 

Warm water and a drop pf dish soap does the job. Use a soft cloth, dry immediately, and finish with a silver polishing cloth.

TARNISH 

Tarnish is natural, not damage. If a piece has an antiqued finish, polish only the raised surfaces to preserve the contrast. 

STORAGE 

Store pieces separately in a soft pouch or lined box. Keep away from humid areas and direct sunlight to slow tarnishing.

A NOTE ON RING SIZING 

Getting the right fit starts with an accurate measurement. Wide band rings in particular may require sizing up by ¼ to ½ size for a comfortable fit, so please keep that in mind when ordering. If you’re unsure of your size, we recommend visiting a local jeweler for a professional measurement before placing your order.
